Are Labrador Retrievers Big Chewers?

You have finally brought up one of the best dogs around. Your family has a Labrador Retriever and they are excited to have a dog who can run around with them and have a lot of fun.

The Labrador Retriever is a friendly, loyal, and smart dog that can have a lot of fun, but many pet owners are worried about how much this dog is going to chew.

But are Labrador Retrievers big chewers?

Are Labrador Retrievers Big Chewers?

Labrador Retrievers can become big chewers if the owner does not take care of them. They may do this out of curiosity, boredom, teething, or to let out energy. If you do not keep your Labrador Retriever occupied, they may start to chew on things you don’t want them to chew on.

There are a lot of reasons why the Lab is going to start chewing on some of the items that are in your home.

Having a plan in place will ensure that they do not destroy everything.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons that this dog is going to be a big chewer.

Your Lab is a big dog that has a lot of energy and can get bored and lonely when they are not around their owners.

Because of this, they may try to find ways to get out all of the energy and not be bored.

This may result in them eating through and chewing through some of your personal items, which is something that no one is going to like to see when they come home.

There are things that you can do to help avoid some of this chewing, but it is important to realize that these dogs may chew through some of the items that you have if you are not careful.

Why Does the Labrador Retriever Chew On Items?

There are a lot of reasons why the Lab is going to work on chewing everything.

Lack of training is one reason, and the younger the Lab, the more they are going to chew through some of the items that you have in your home.

One issue that can come up is that the Lab is that they are curious about the world around them.

They may take some time to explore around the home and see what is new.

This curiosity is worse when you have a newer puppy who would like to see what is going on in the world around them.

They may choose to use their teeth to explore more about the world and this could result in more items around the home being destroyed.

Teething can be painful and uncomfortable for a lot of Labs and they will try to find some relief.

It is a good idea for you to have a number of toys around the home that will help them to work on the teeth, cleaning them off and helping them to get stronger, while alleviating some of the pain at the same time.

If you do not provide some of these toys to help with the problem, it is likely that the dog is going to rely on their explorations, and some of your personal items, to help them to get rid of the pain that they feel.

Another issue that some dogs are going to face is that they need to do the biting and chewing in order to let off some of that energy.

Just like with small children, the Lab is going to have a ton of energy that they will need to get out in some manner.

If you do not take them out for a good walk or play with them before leaving in the morning and then expect them to sit alone at home for a long time, then they will look around the home to find a good way to let out all of the energy.

And this can include chewing through a lot of the items in your home.

Boredom, which is related to some of the issues with lots of energy, can be one of the other reasons that your dog is biting and chewing on everything that they can find in the area.

If the dog does not have some kind of entertainment to enjoy, they are going to get bored and will look for something that seems like a lot of fun.

This can include them finding lots of items to chew on.

Any of these issues could be to blame when it comes to the chewing that you see with your dog.

Having a good plan in place and training your dog not to bite and chew on things will help to protect some of the personal items that are in your home.

How Do I Stop My Labrador Retriever From Chewing?

There are different steps that you are able to use to help make sure that your dog is not going to be able to bite through items in your home.

To start, consider puppy proofing the room. Take all of the objects that your dog may want to chew on out of the room.

If there is anything you are worried that the dog is going to chew through, those need to be taken out of the room so there are no temptations.

A crate is a good option for your dog when you are away.

This can be a safe and secure place for your dog, allowing them to feel comfortable when you are not home.

But it has an added benefit of making sure that the dog is going to be stuck in one area and is not able to get around the house and get into things that they do not need.

You should always make sure that your dog has the right toys to play with.

The chew toys are some of the best options for you to go with.

These chew toys are going to help with the teething problems so that they will feel better and not cause too many problems when they try to chew through some of the hard items around them.

This can also provide some entertainment to the dog so they are less likely to get bored at the same time.

As the pet owner, you need to make sure that you are supervising your puppy.

If they are not in their secure area, you need to supervise some of their behavior so that they are not able to wander off and find somewhere else to get into some trouble.

This is even a good time to play with them and give them some attention so that you do not find a mess of chewed up objects at the same time.

For some puppies, the issue happens when the owner is going to leave the home.

Having a good leaving the house routine in place is going to help with this.

Try not to make a huge deal when it is time to leave the house

If the dog is whining or barking when you leave, do not pay attention to this.

This gives them validation for some of their behavior, and that is the opposite of what you want to see happen.

You can develop a routine that works the best for you, ensuring that the dog will not feel stressed out or worried at that time.

If you do plan to leave the house for an extended amount of time, then you need to make sure that the dog has had some exercise and play time. This can be a vigorous run around the block a few times, play time, or time to run around outside to help them out. An active dog is a happy dog and when it comes to the activity level of the Lab, you will need to take the time to get them worn out. They may even take a nice nap afterwards so you have less time to worry about them being alone in the home.

Training Your Labrador Retriever to Prevent Chewing

One of the best things that you can do for your Lab is to give them the right type of training to make sure that the dog is not going to chew on all of the items around your home when you are not there.

This does take some time and planning, but it is one of the best ways to ensure that your dog will behave and you will not have a really messy home when you get back.
